Fluoride... you've probably heard of it, but do you know what it is and what it does to your body? In this blog, we answer questions about fluoride and why you should skip it.
What is fluoride?
In its purest form, fluorine is a poisonous gas and therefore harmful to your health. But to make fluorine not harmful to your body, it is combined with another substance to make sure it is not toxic to your health. To make it not harmful, it is combined with another substance, for example sodium or calcium.
Fluoride occurs in a natural form, it is in water, eggs, red meat and some fruits. But fluoride is also made in chemical form for dental care products, think of: toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss. Of course everyone takes care of his/her teeth and brushes the teeth with toothpaste , in the mainstream supermarkets and drugstores you can hardly avoid toothpaste with fluoride.
Our drinking water only contains very small amounts of fluoride, as fluoride occurs naturally in the soil and reaches the groundwater in this way.
“Your oral health is connected to your overall health.”
What does fluoride do?
It is said that fluoride makes the enamel of your teeth harder and in this way helps to protect against acid attacks (bacteria in your mouth convert sugars from your food into acids). But also brushing with fluoride toothpaste is said to help to repair incipient cavities, plus using the well-known fluoride treatment from the dentist.
(it is of course good to ask yourself how the cavities in the teeth arise, read: a lot of sugars and unhealthy food).
We believe fluoride does more harm than good... read on to find out why we're not fans of fluoride.
Now I hear you thinking... but why are you writing a blog about fluoride? If they say it is good for your teeth. Well, after the Second World War, fluoride was added to drinking water because it would improve the teeth, something that came over from America. But at the end of the 60s, a social debate arose about the use of fluoride in drinking water. It would cause health problems, such as: migraine, skin rash, intestinal and stomach complaints and depression. Since the addition of fluoride to drinking water, these figures increased by 5 percent in 8 years. As a result, fluoride was no longer added to Dutch drinking water in the mid-70s.
Of course, it is not the case that you will immediately become ill after using fluoride once/the low doses of fluoride in toothpaste, but in the long term this can certainly have a negative impact on your health.
With the current unhealthy lifestyle of many people, it is becoming increasingly common for many people to suffer from bad teeth.
The real culprit of (beginning) cavities is mainly a result of excessive sugar intake, refined white flour products and insufficient oral care.
"Fluoride is used as a pesticide and is a component of rat poison."
We list the disadvantages of fluoride for you:
- it can cause behavioral changes.
- it lowers the IQ.
- it disrupts the functioning of the pituitary gland (= a gland in the brain that controls and is responsible for the correct balance and functioning of hormones).
- it therefore has adverse effects on hormones, such as slowing down the thyroid gland (this is due to the displacement of iodine) and the sleep/wake rhythm because it produces less melatonin in the pituitary gland.
- it accelerates aging processes by disrupting the pituitary gland.
- it can cause neurological complaints such as: headache, dizziness, spasms, visual disturbances and loss of concentration.
- the immune system is weakened by a decrease in leukocyte and phagocytic activity.
Tips to avoid fluoride as much as possible:
- focus on preventing poor oral hygiene by choosing healthy food and avoiding sugars and white flour products. Especially changing eating and drinking habits.
- brush your teeth with fluoride-free toothpaste.
- continue to maintain good and healthy oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth with fluoride-free oral care products.
- a holistic dental practice has a different approach than regular dental practices. A holistic dentist focuses during treatment not only on the mouth and teeth but also the effect of the teeth on our health.
